What am I signing up for?

Sentinel is currently in development. We’re asking people to sign up so we can let you know when Sentinel will ready for sale. The sign up page will help us gauge public interest in Sentinel. Finishing Sentinel will take a lot of time, money and hard work. We just wanted to check that people will actually be interested in this product when we’re finished.

Don’t worry, we won’t send you spam or sell your information; we’re a privacy company we don’t believe in that.

What is Sentinel?

Sentinel is a device and a service. You plug the Sentinel Device in to your home (or office) network. As part of the Sentinel Service, we keep your Sentinel Device’s security up to date so it is ready to protect you and your devices against the latest threats out there.

Who is Sentinel for?

Sentinel is for homes and small businesses that are interested in protecting their privacy and security and/or the privacy and security of their customers.

Do I need a “privacy” product if I’m not doing anything “wrong”?

You probably have blinds on your windows at home; it’s not because you’re doing anything “wrong.” Some things just aren’t supposed to be public. That’s just as true online as it is in your home. Unfortunately, there’s never been an easy way for people to protect their privacy online. Sentinel makes online privacy easy & simple.

What makes Sentinel different than other privacy products?

Only Sentinel provides end-to-end protection of your email content and meta-data. Few products provide end-to-end protection, and the ones that do only protect the email content. Plus, most security and privacy products are extremely difficult to setup and use. Sentinel is easy to setup and works in the background so it is invisible and you can continue using the apps and programs you're used to.

Also, most other email products require you to change your email address to use their service. Sentinel allows you to continue using your current email address.

What is “meta-data”?

If you think of email as a letter, the “meta-data” is like the information on the envelope. This includes things you see when writing the email like the To, From, Cc, Bcc and Subject lines. However, “meta-data” also includes a lot of information you don’t see like the date and time you send the email, the location you sent it from, the program and device you used to send it, if it was a reply to another email, and much more!

Only Sentinel is designed to provide end-to-end protection of your email content and meta-data.

Why does “meta-data” matter?

Former head of the NSA, Gen. Hayden, said “We kill people based on meta-data.”

Meta-data can be used to learn almost every intimate or confidential detail of your business or personal life. Who you talk to reveals just as much as what you actually say. If a CEO is emailing a bankruptcy attorney you don’t need to read the emails to know the company is in trouble. If someone is emailing a breast cancer specialist you can guess what kind of medical condition they have.

Students at MIT built a simple tool to let people see how revealing your own email Meta-data is.

Students at Stanford also did a study that showed how revealing meta-data can be over even short periods of time.

Don’t service providers like AT&T, Verizon, Comcast, Time Warner, etc. already protect my privacy?

Verizon's Vice President of National Security Policy, Marcus Sachs, said "Don't look at us to protect your data; that's on you." at the Cyber Security Summit 2013 in New York City.

Service providers often want to limit your privacy. These companies are interested in making money by learning everything about you and selling that information.

AT&T and Verizon were recently found to be using “super-cookies” to track and collect data when smart phones on their networks were used to browse the web.

AT&T even charges their fiber internet customers an extra $348/year if they don’t want to be monitored!

Sentinel protects users against this kind of invasive long-term spying and monitoring by service providers.

Does Sentinel protect me when I’m away from my home (or office)?

Yes, Sentinel will protect the security and privacy of your devices and data no matter where you use them.

Can I keep using my normal Gmail, Yahoo, etc email address?

You should not have to change your email address to protect your privacy. Sentinel can protect the content and meta-data existing accounts. You can continue to use Gmail, Yahoo and most other major email service providers, and they will not be able to read your email content or meta-data.

Will the Sentinel Service have access to my data or my decryption keys?

No, your data and your decryption keys (aka private keys) are kept on your Sentinel Device, and they are created when you setup the Sentinel Device in your home (or office). The system is designed so that you have control of your data and decryption keys. We like this arrangement because it makes it impossible for us to comply with any requests for access to your data.
